TO THE LEFT: the result of the Logo I designed for the chorus I belong to.
☼ Recap of a Busy Week ☼
Friday and Saturday of last weekend our chorus, 'Hearts of Harmony' competed at 'The Sweet Adelines Regional Convention and Competition'. 600 singers from three provinces met at the Telus Convention Center in Calgary.
The majority of the performers had accommodations in the Marriott, Hyatt Regency and Fairmont Palliser. These hotels where connected directly to the Convention Center via pedways. I may have got lost a few times in the maze of corridors :) We were grateful for the passages when the snow/rain/wind happened on Saturday though!
One thing about acapella singing, it can burst forth at any time. Throughout the weekend we heard comments from smiling hotel guests and city residents stating they had a group of ladies sing to them.
But alas, a seminar was scheduled for Saturday in our hotel and signs were posted asking the musicians to please not sing in the hallway. A request that would have some people wonder for sure.
This week aside from working at the music store four days, I taught guitar classes two evenings; prepared and delivered a presentation for career day at the Stettler middle school and taught private lessons. After Musings is finished I will have a whole day tomorrow. Do you think I will need it?
The Blue Guitar, the Airline and the Luthier

The saga continues...a gift of a beautiful blue guitar; a flight from Los Angeles to Calgary; the airline handles it as regular luggage and it is crushed; the luthier (a person who builds and repairs stringed instruments) gives an estimate; the airline pays; the guitar is left with the company connected with the luthier.
Months have turned into a year. There were emails and phone calls checking on the repair status. The shop would contact the luthier and get back to me that it would be more months. Finally, I get a phone call! Was it done?
I was told that it been repaired but they were not satisfied with the result. I was glad they were striving to do good work but frustrated that now there would be more waiting. A few months later, an email and again the color match was not as it should be, the repaired crack visible... more months pass.
Just short of the two year mark, I phoned the company to remind them how long this was taking. I was informed that the second time around was not much better than the first. The next step would be to completely strip the finish and possible remove the top. The cost would be in the thousands.
With a heavy heart, and after two years of waiting, I went to pick up my guitar. The repair shop was very apologetic and sincerely disappointed in the results. I was charged a small fraction of the estimated cost.
The crack was visibly repaired.
Instead of traveling with an instrument, I now send it ahead using a shipping company. This seems to be much safer and there is better insurance. With the shipping company you can track where your item is daily.
Thus concludes the saga of the blue guitar, the airline and the luthier. But wait! There was another guitar that was coming back on that same flight.
Next week - The G-Sharp guitar from Norway...Check Back!
Hope your weekend is Sunny as mine is! ~ Hugs Belinda♥

This is a special weekend for me. Last September I auditioned and became a member of an awesome barbershop chorus called Hearts of Harmony. This weekend is the first time I will be competing with them at the
☼Sweet Adelines Regional Convention and Competition☼ !
Last night I taught the '101010 Again' Guitar class and this A.M. got up early to get packed and ready to leave. I have a three hour drive to Calgary and will be staying there until Sunday.
The competition kicks off tonight with the barbershop quartets. I look forward with great anticipation to a weekend of acapella and fun, fun, fun!
You probably know where I am going with this - uh huh, ran out of time and now have to run out the door. Thus, the continuing saga of the 'Blue Guitar, the Airline and the Luthier' will have to be continued next weekend.
Hope your weekend is an amazing one - wish me luck! ~ Belinda♥

♩ The Blue Guitar and the Airline

Last week's Musings concluded with a drive home from the Calgary airport with a damaged blue guitar. There was long crack that ran from the end of the guitar almost to the bridge.
The Guitar was a gift from a friend in L.A. and I was bringing it back with me to Canada.
Before boarding the plane, fragile stickers had been placed in numerous places on the guitar case then it was taken to the fragile items area for special handling. The luggage handlers had sent down with the regular luggage and it had been crushed!
As I drove the three hours home I had time to reflect. How can one replace a gift? What would the airline do? Would I be compensated? How long would it take?
There were emails and phone calls back and forth to the airline. A request was made for photos of the damage and an estimate on repair costs. The luthier (a person who makes or repairs stringed instruments)estimated it would be $750.00 to restore the instrument.
Impressively, the airline did not dispute the cost and a check was issued after a relatively short period of time. Now to take the guitar to the luthier. The next saga was to begin.
♩ The Blue Guitar and the Luthier
It seems there are not many luthiers and thus the wait to have an instrument made or repaired can be extensive. I was to become well aware of this. Months turned into a year. There were emails and phone calls checking on the repair status. The shop would contact the luthier and get back to me that it would be more months.
Sometime after a year and some months, there was a phone call! Was it done?
Check back next week for rest of the story!

PRELUDE:
I am a Sales Associate at Pfeiffer House of Music. In January 2008, I was selected to attend the Los Angeles N.A.M.M. Trade Show as one of the buyers.
The National Association of Music Merchants, commonly called NAMM in reference to the organization's popular NAMM trade shows, is the not-for-profit association that promotes the pleasures and benefits of making music and strengthens the global music products industry. It is one of the largest music product trade shows in the world, founded in 1901.
I had prearranged appointments with Canadian representatives from such companies as Roland, Yamaha, Ibanez, Hal Leonard, etc. In between appointments there was time to check out the exhibits, play the instruments and check out various artists who were endorsing or demonstrating the products. Three days immersed in music; a musicians dream!
How does the Blue Guitar become part of this story?
♬ ♩ The Blue Guitar and the Airline

While in L.A, I got in contact with a long time musician friend whom I knew attended the NAMM every year. My boss and his wife had made reservations at a Jazz Club and we decided to all meet there.
My friend and I made arrangements to meet at the NAMM and then on Saturday, to play some guitar.
At the conclusion of the evening, after goodbyes had been said, I was presented with the beautiful guitar I had been playing and told it was mine. I was overwhelmed!
Thus I became the proud owner of this beautiful instrument. Inlays of abalone and mother of pearl adorn the front, back, fretboard and headstock. It was a tiger maple arch-top with 'F' holes and Fishman electronics. A true work of art.
There was now a guitar to bring back to Canada. At the airport fragile stickers were put in several places on the guitar case and it was sent along with the fragile items. I boarded the plane with reserved confidence that my new instrument would be handled carefully.
After landing at the Calgary Airport, I picked up my regular luggage and then continued over to the fragile items area. The other passengers had picked up their possessions and I stood there alone. Nothing else seemed to be forthcoming.
I then heard my name over the sound system asking me to come to the luggage area. With fragile stickers all over the case, the guitar had been sent down with the regular luggage!
Feeling sick to my stomach, I walked to the counter where the airline reps were and opened the case in front of them. My fears were not unfounded, my beautiful guitar was damaged. A long crack ran from the end of the guitar almost to the bridge. I was distraught! How can one replace a gift?
I filled out a damaged report and then started the three hour drive home. On the way I pondered: What would the airline do? Would I be compensated? How long would it take?
Check back next week for the rest of story.
Enjoy your weekend! ~ Belinda♥

10-10-10 Guitar Method Update
Last month, two classes were started. It is now the seventh beginner and the second follow-up group (called 10-10-10 Again).
At the conclusion of each ten weeks, there is a graduation complete with certificates, a guitar cake and beverages. In addition, all are encouraged to attend an 'Open Mic Night' where as a group we perform several songs on stage.
'Open Mic Night' became a tradition beginning with the second group. This gives the students something to strive toward and acts as a recital for friends, family and the public. Remember the majority start the ten weeks with no knowledge of how to play a guitar!
Although the idea of being on the stage seems impossible and frightening initially, almost everyone shares in the performance at the conclusion. It is our last big hurrah to celebrate ten weeks of great times learning and playing together.
10-10-10 has slowly evolved to the point where there has been interest in marketing the course. I am giving that some thought.
Now on with ...
The Amazing Tree♫
Last week ended with the question "Where did the massive tree seen here on the website come from OR is it photoshop?"

During a photo-shoot in late fall of 2010, photographer Vanessa Huff and I had spent a full day taking photos at several locations around Edmonton. It was a cool day, with intermittent cloudy and sunny periods.
Late afternoon was upon us and it would be dark soon. The sky was lightly misting now. We decided to call it a day however, as we were driving, we saw the Kinnaird Park sign. No harm in checking it out quickly.
There was a winding path leading down a hill that led us into the park. The air was calm and moist with the scent of fallen leaves. With the roller luggage (with wardrobe changes and camera accessories) and guitar in tow, a search began for locations that were conducive to a photo op.
There were large stones to sit on, multi-colored autumn leaves and bushes with bright red and orange berries that served as photo backdrops. The light was waning and we knew that it would be dark soon however, we decided to check what was directly ahead and then go back.
As we rounded that last corner, we were stunned. Standing agape we stared up at a huge and most amazing tree. The roots were massive with areas a small child could hide. They twined up the hill forming a pathway as if inviting visitors into a different world. It was like a scene in a fairy tale. Creative thoughts began to flow. No Photoshop would be needed here!
It is a mystery still how this tree came to be there. It stood majestically towering above the poplar, spruce and birch that dominated the wooded area. This summer I intend to go back to collect some leaves to see if anyone can identify what genus it might belong to.
Next week, the blue guitar and the airline...Check Back!
Have a awesome weekend ~ Belinda♥

I am the happy owner of a new iPad3. A musician friend came into the music store and showed me his newly acquired Pad. I KNEW I had to have one.
Previously all of my music was in a huge master binder. The hundreds of songs were then sorted in genres and reprinted for 6 smaller binders.
When there was a performance, I would pull out the songs on my set list to practice with and then to take along to the venue should they be needed.
The next day set lists and songs would need to be returned to their original binders - which did not always happen. It was a daunting task to keep everything organized.
Enter iPad3: Hundreds of songs sorted into individual file folders - on one screen. With a few swipes, songs, a set list and backing tracks can be easily available and accessible during a performance. How?
Thanks to the several companies that make mic stand iPad mounts, the Pad can be placed unobtrusively in front of the performer. I opted for the iKlip.
I cannot wait to try it out tomorrow at 'Open Mic Night' at The Town Pump.
Meanwhile.....
The 10-10-10 Guitar Method ♫
The First Songs

Students, Guitars and music were ready. With a 1,2,3 count, we all slowly began to play the first song using the D and G chords. After that, we would add the A chord and play the next tune. The songs were 'Jambalaya' and 'It's a Working Man').
Consistent strumming was required and we worked on smooth chord to chord transitions.
Earlier, the group had practiced the hand positioning and chord shape; examined what it looked like from the top of the neck; written it on a blank chord diagram; and listen to the sound.
The result was beyond what any in the group had expected. We had played our two songs completely through several times. With a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment, the first lesson came to a conclusion.
All were sent off with encouragement, praise and suggestions on how to find opportunities to practice. The past hour and a half had confirmed that the 10-10-10 Guitar Method was definitely a keeper.
The adage that people can accomplish amazing feats if allowed to push past their preconceived boundaries proved true. I am a believer now more than ever!
Next week after a short follow up about 10-10-10, the question "Where did the massive tree seen here on the website come from OR is it photoshop?" Check Back for the answer!
Go beyond what you believe you can do - you will be surprised! Have a great long weekend~ Belinda♥

I made it through an extremely busy month! Spring is here and I have time to breathe - could life be better?
Now I can focus on working on other pages of the site and getting in shape for the summer.
I also have the privilege of taking on the position of Marketing Coordinator for Hearts of Harmony, the barbershop chorus I am a member of. I am working on a logo for them this weekend and will let you know how it progresses.
The 10-10-10 Guitar Method ♫
The Journey Begins
The first 10-10-10 class was about to begin. How would students respond? The time arrived!
The doorbell was busy for the next twenty minutes as an eclectic group of nine persons arrived, guitars in hand.
The class was composed of five males and four females of which three were teens - one mother/son.
The air was filled with anticipation and apprehension. We started with a team building exercise that would introduce each student and opened the room to learning. After the game and some laughs, the atmosphere was light - we were ready to go!
We started with tuning, string names, parts of the guitar, proper positioning of the guitar and how to hold a pick. It was time to introduce three chords and the song.
All the senses would be used to help pattern the chord. The group would shape the chord on the guitar; examine what it looked like from the top of the neck; write it on a blank chord diagram; and listen to the sound.
Above all they would always keep strumming while repositioning to the next chord. Now it was time for two songs, 'Jambalaya' and 'It's a Working Man'. Our chords were D, G and A.
Now the students had the words and chord names before them and we began to slowly play the tunes. Consistent strumming was necessary and they were to sing as they could manage. Sound impossible?
How did they do? Check Back Next Weekend!

The Other Music In My World♫
I belong to Sweet Adelines International, a worldwide organization of women singers committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony. My Chorus is the Red Deer, Alberta, Hearts of Harmony Chapter.
To get us ready for the Sweet Adeline Region #26, Regional Competition held in Calgary, AB Canada May 3-6, 2012, this weekend was dedicated to a country retreat where we lived, breathed and sang barbershop harmony.
We had 12 hours of coaching and instruction from a professional brought in from Surrey, B.C.. Saturday was topped off with a motivatiional speaker from Calgary.
We will compete against 15 other Choruses from Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan.
Previously answered about the the 10-10-10 Guitar Method:
. What is this method?
. How did it get its' start and when?
. Why is it different?
The Beginning ~
The 10-10-10
Guitar Method♫
A 50 page course book was now compiled, complete with diagrams, charts and information. The last 20 pages consisting of 20 easy songs with words and chords.
Professional binders with a display window were purchased hence, with editing and proofing accomplished, the 10-10-10 Guitar Method was ready for duplication.
There was no way of knowing how well the method would work or how much material could be covered with each lesson.
Thus, the Course Outline page would be created week by week dependent on how quickly the students learned.
I would have to remain flexible, adapting and possibly making changes as the weeks progressed. Next step was a registration form and a map. There was an area in my home that would be perfect for a group of up to ten.
Other supplies such as white boards, pencils, sticky notes, page markers, extra guitar strings, and 10 folding chairs were needed. Each person would receive a chord chart - those I could get at the music store
10-10-10 was ready for students. How many would commit to the ten weeks? I had the list of the people who had expressed interest in taking group lessons. List in hand I began phoning and soon got the answer - there were nine! They were ready to go so why wait, I would start the following week.
To start the evening, the plan was to have an introductory game that was entertaining, would help with names and tension release. Each person would have the opportunity to talk about their expectations for the course and tell a little about themselves.
Following that, I would teach them the parts of the guitar, string names, how to hold the guitar and and how to hold a pick. Next step would be getting everyone tuned. That being complete, the work on the chords would begin. There would be three chords and we would use them to play and sing a song. All this the first lesson - was I expecting to much?
How did that first class work out? Check Back Next Weekend!

The'10-10-10 AGAIN' Guitar Class started last night. Seven students and possibly eight will be in the group. It is so rewarding to see the class progress. I love teaching!
Today I work at the music store and after work, pack up to go to Edmonton. Tomorrow I will be performing at a fundraiser hosted by Mount Royal Arts Core School to raise money for their Arts Programming.
The event is called 'The Culinary Arts Cook Off'. The program will feature well known chefs from the Edmonton area who will participate in a macaroni cook off competition. Will it not be interesting to see what creations they come up with? I am sure they will not taste like Kraft Dinner!
NOTE: Until the end of March, 2012,
20% OF ALL CDs purchased from the site will be dontated to Mount Royal Arts School. If you have been pondering purchasing one, now is the time. Your support of the Arts will be graciously acknowledged here on the site.

Weather in Alberta is as changing as the wind! When I got back from Mexico and +25 C (+75 F) weather, it was -26 C (-15 F) in Alberta...brrrr.
The following week had above freezing temperatures which melted most of the snow and ushered in hope of spring. NOT a chance!
As Musings was being written, wet heavy snow sheeted down, blanketing the landscape with 15-16 cm (approx. 9 inches) of wet, heavy snow. Cars were stuck, highways closed, functions cancelled and weather warnings were in place.
Fast forward to this weekend.. the snow is all melting, pavement is bare again and it is +4 C
(40 F) and sunny!.
On with Musings ~
The 10-10-10 Guitar Method♫
10-10-10 Guitar Method
. What is this?
. How did it get its' start and when?
. Why is it different?
I work in a music store and some of the frequent comments made by adult visitors are:
* "I have always wanted to play guitar"
* "I am retired now - I want to learn"
* "I bought a guitar years ago and never had time"
* "I tried learning, but gave up after a few lessons"
* "I cannot get my fingers to move fast enough"
* "I think my fingers are too short" - or "too fat"
Quite often I found myself saying I should develop a group course just for adult beginners. I noticed that the response was generally positive and people started leaving their name and phone number just in case. Now a list was started.
At the beginning of 2009, one of those people on my list phoned and ask when the class was starting. It was a sign - I needed to quit talking and act.
Being self-taught, I knew how difficult it was to start off with little understanding of chord structure, theory and technique. Back then, my learning came from guitar books and tips from any guitar player that crossed my path.
There were many things I learned years later that I wished I had known when I started. How much easier I could have progressed. I would construct a course that would give students this vital information right at the beginning.
Being a certified Life Skills Coach, I am trained to run group courses. I would incorporate those skills to make a cohesive, entertaining and high energy class that would accelerate learning. I also knew from training that to be most creative, the logical side of the brain had to be kept non-dominant. I would use techniques to make that happen.
Now the compiling of information began. I started by listing the fundamental basics along with the techniques and theory I wished I had known when I started. Next, a search of the internet for thoughts and ideas. I needed to construct charts, diagrams and graphs. A weekly outline would be needed.
Our busy society makes it difficult to make long-term commitments. It was my thinking that I would start off with a course of 10 weeks. I had no idea how quickly everyone would learn, but decided the course would include instruction on basic theory, guitar knowledge/care, ten songs and ten chords.
Thus, the 10-10-10 Adult Group Guitar Method was born ~ 10 Chords-10 Songs-10 Weeks!

' THE LADY CAME OUT OF THE SEA '
Ocean Waves ~ The Rest of the Story
As stated last week, there were ocean recordings on the Roland keyboard. They were inserted in select areas in 'Lady' but lacked the emotion the team was looking for.
In my studio back in Canada, 'Lady' was playing on the computer, crying out for sounds of the ocean.
Resting on the back wall behind various other hand drums was the answer! Why had it not occurred to me before? It would be experimental but certainly worth a try.
What was this instrument? An Ocean Drum! This percussive instrument originated in Nepal, a land-locked country in the Himalayas.
The Ocean Drum: a professional grade, double-sided frame drum with Metal beads inside. There is a sensitive synthetic head and mallet with which to create various effects and sounds of the ocean. Dimensions of the one used in 'Lady' ~ twenty-two inches in diameter by three inches deep.
How to Play: If you hold the drum in both hands and shake the metal beads vigorously between the two skins a loud sound like thunder or crashing waves is obtained. Gentle controlled side to side or figure eight motion can produce the calming mesmerizing sound of the ebb and flow of waves on the shore.
Recording: The task was to record the sounds from the drum while listening to 'The Lady Came Out of the Sea' on headphones. The room had to be absolutely silent, even the computer was turned off. The Zoom H2 would be used to do the actual recording.
After a few practice runs, two acceptable recordings were made. They were then uploaded into an email and sent to the studio in Ohio. The engineer was skeptical when I described the drum and how it functioned, but was suitably impressed when the recording was inserted into the mix.
Thus the sound of the ocean ebbs and flows throughout 'The Lady Came Out of the Sea'. There is a sample of the song on the 'LISTEN ' page ~ check it out!
What is the 10-10-10 guitar class I mentioned I was going to teach? More next weekend...Check Back!

Before continuing with 'The Lady Came Out of the Sea' and the ocean waves...
KUDOS TO WESTJET AIRLINES
The trip back to Canada on Tuesday, was an eventful one. The flight to Calgary was to be a just over six hours including a one hour layover in Vancouver, B.C..
During the flight to Vancouver, one of the passengers became extremely ill. The flight attendants asked medical personnel to come forward. Two hours or so into the flight, the captain declared a medical emergency.
We were informed the plane was to be rerouted to San Francisco, California. When we landed, the paramedics were waiting on the tarmac and quickly boarded and prepared the patient and his wife for transport to the hospital.
Because our landing was unscheduled, we did not have customs clearance thus passengers were requested to remain on board while necessary paper work was completed. Medical supplies also had to be replenished. We were grounded for around 2 hours
When the plane was once again in the air heading to Vancouver, free food and non alcoholic drinks were supplied. Missing the connecting flight meant an overnight stay. Passengers were supplied with a beautiful room in the Fairmount Hotel and meals - Thank you Westjet!
It was impressive to see the crew spring into action and how comforting to know that such emergency procedure exist. Just left wondering how the passenger made out.
How the ocean waves ebbed and flowed into 'The Lady Came Out of the Sea' until they became part of the music.
' THE LADY CAME OUT OF THE SEA '
As we started to build the background ambiance for 'The Lady Came Out of the Sea' (hence to be know as 'Lady'), it was clear that the sound of waves needed to permeate the music.
The team considered how a perfect sound could be created. We started by searching the internet for ocean sound waves. The idea was to find the right sound and then recreate it. There were many recordings however they were interlaced with background noises (such as the wind passing over the microphone).
There were preset ocean recordings on the Roland keyboard however, they did not sound natural played throughout the entire length of 'Lady'. The presets could be inserted in select areas but it was just not the sound the team was looking for.
With four weeks of intensive work accomplished, it was time to return to Canada. Tucked in my suitcase on a CD were rough mixes of all the songs we had recorded. By listening to these mixes, the team could evaluate each song to determine what changes needed to be made.
What is a mix? A mix is when the engineer takes the recordings (tracks) of all the different instruments and vocals to blend, balance, add to, remove from and basically tweak the sound.
So, just how DID the ocean waves ebb and flow into 'The Lady Came Out of the Sea' until they became part of the music?
NOTE: This week 'Musings' has become lengthy has it not? I will leave the rest of the story for next week:)
Next Friday ~ Ocean Waves and 'Lady' - the rest of the story... Check Back!

On Tuesday, February 21st, Westjet will take me back to Canada and the cold north. The flight leaves at 4 p.m., stops over in Vancouver, British Columbia and gets into Calgary, Alberta at 11:30 p.m.
It will be a three hour drive before I see my front door. Hopefully the roads will be clear of ice and snow. If not, a night in a hotel will be in order.
The internet held pretty steady this morning. 'Musings' is complete!
~ The words and music for this song were inspired by my love for ballads, traditional music and Celtic verse.
' THE LADY CAME OUT OF THE SEA '
Often a songwriter/composer finds the music and lyrics of a song appearing simultaneously or individually; suddenly or over a period of time.
For 'The Lady Came Out of the Sea', the music channeled through my fingers and burst forth like an ocean wave against a rocky shore.
As the music rang forth from the strings of my guitar, there was a ebb and flow of movement. The words 'the lady came out of the sea' continued to resurface over the next few months whenever I played the tune.
When it was time, the words to 'Lady' appeared like a sudden storm and the song was complete. The lyrics painted a picture of a Lady and her knight - of love, trust and bravery.
However, as the sea holds secrets and mysteries in its' depths, within the words of 'Lady' you may find your own answers or treasures - that I leave with you.
"It was dawn on the emerald green sea
Floating alone in tranquility
Appeared a ship of purple hue
Therein lay a lady fair absent her crew."
"Caught in a whirlwind of cascading dreams
Amid scented mists, within winds of change.
Slow waves of thought wash over her still
As the lady drifts over the sea,
The lady drifts over the sea."
"Twas then appeared there on the shore
A valiant knight, a rapier he wore.
Wading a boat into the tide
He rowed to the ship with the lady inside."
"Held in his presence she woke with a cry
Gazed 'cross the air to the sea of the sky.
An isle of seclusion fetters her still
Oh lady come out of the sea,
Lady come out of the sea."
"Her knight raised the sails, took to the helm
To a secret cove within his realm.
Sheltered from dragons, tears in her eyes
As the sunset grew crimson she let out a sigh."
"Plunged in the waters fresh, cool and clear
Wrapped in its bosom absent of fear.
She surfaced in radiance arms to the sun
Then the lady came out of the sea."
Next Friday ~ How the ocean waves ebbed and flowed into 'The Lady Came Out of the Sea' until they became part of the music...Check Back Next Week to see how!
As a new week begins, let it be a new start, "surface in radiance arms to the sun"! The Lady Belinda ♥

I am distracted by palm trees and the warm ocean air of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The computer or the beach and sun? What a dilemma...!
I will be here on the Baja Peninsula until February 21, at which time it will be back to the ice and snow of North Western Canada.
~ At times the thought of letting go of the past is preempted by fear of an unknown and unfamiliar direction.
There may be hesitation to choose or follow a new path even though in the distance, there is a glimpse of light ..."follow the path of the light."
' OUT OF THE DARKNESS '
"Searching eyes of a stranger,
Wondering if you're there.
Can I face the future on my own?
I hear haunting voices calling,
I am aware of a path in the shadows of my mind."
The strangers' eyes do not hold the answer but rather acceptance that a decision and change will have to be made. The eyes being searched could belong to you.
What changes? Marriage, divorce, death, career, children, age and numerous situations that are part of what it is to be human.
The answer is always found within when we are ready to listen . How may times have we said or heard "I knew this/that is what I should have done." Yes, the answer was there all along.
"Out of darkness, into the light,
Out of darkness, into the light.
Follow the path of the light
Out of darkness, out of the dark,
Out of darkness, out of the dark."
Decisions are not complete without confusion and questions saturating the mind. What should I do? Can I trust this is the right way? What if I cannot go back? Why should I change? How do I go on from here?
"Should I give up, should I give in?
Trust my intuition or go back where I've been?
You came in my life and I let you stay.
Is it time to say goodbye, be on my way?"
Love of the past and what was slowly fades and becomes shadows of the distance.
"Love is fading through the empty air
Shadows of illusion slowly coming clear
Distance comes between us, wakes reality
Watching your reaction, sets the answer free"
Learning to react to new reality gives freedom to walk boldly out of the darkness.
"Out of darkness, into the light
Out of darkness, into the light
Follow the path of the light"

January, the start of a new year and a time for resetting and new resolves. February promises an end to the cold and darkness of wintery days.
Looking ahead, there is the promise of spring. Thoughts of rebirth, renewal and regrowth emerge like crocus blooms bursting through the melting snow. A time for moving on, a time to write...
' A BRAND NEW SONG '
"Spring time morning, sunshine on my face
New beginning, new day.
Trusted forever but forever lied.
It's ok, I'm moving on,
Write a brand new song,
Shouldn't take to long, 'cause I'm moving on."
The fresh scent of melting snow and spring rain lifts the spirit. The euphoria motivates spring cleaning, the ridding of unwanted and unused possessions. Materially and emotionally moving on.
"Spring time showers, breezy afternoon
Clean out the closet of my mind.
Broken promise, should have been aware
It's ok, I'm moving on,
Write a brand new song,
Shouldn't take to long, 'cause I'm moving on."
The clean sweep is ending leaving a sense of freedom and letting go. Passing memories look out from under and between the 'to give away' and 'to dispose of' mounds. Soon life will replace those visions with fresh memories as 'A Brand New Song' is written.
"Spring time evening, watch the shadows play
Chasing doubt from my heart.
Disappointment entering my mind
It's ok, I'm moving on,
Write a brand new song,
Shouldn't take to long, 'cause I'm moving on."
Next Friday ~ There are times when letting go eludes us even though we know what must be done. Afraid of the unknown, the new path is avoided until, the time is right, to come 'Out of the Darkness'...Check Back

MIRRORS
A bit of history: Mirrors have been around since the Middle ages, but they were made of polished metal. Glass backed with a metalic coating replaced the older versions in 13th century Europe.
Amusing: A baby gazes in a mirror then turns it over looking for the other child. A cat hissing and swatting at it's own image.
Yet, in a sense, could it be that our perception may not much different? This week 'Musings' is about the song 'Mirror Reflections.'
' MIRROR REFLECTIONS '
Have you ever peered at your reflection and pondered 'who really is this person looking back?' At times, does it seem that the image in front of you does not match who you see with the minds' eye?
"In the mirror, a reflection
Of someone that I think I know
Looks familiar yet something's changed
Could it be? Is it me?"
Although mirrors assist us to make physical adjustments every day, sometimes this can foster the belief that what we see is WHO we are. In a sense, we walk away leaving behind part of who we are on the other side of the mirror. The answer is written backwards until we can walk away complete.
"Mirror, mirror on the wall
Show the truth, tell it all
I try to read the answer
The words are written backwards
How did I end up on the other side of the mirror?"
An ever changing reflection is what it is to be human. As years become decades, children and adults alike seek their identity in the numerous displayed angles of their changing image.
Like a two way mirror, there are two perspectives. How we view ourselves and what other see. If we listen to how positive people view us, we will have a more balanced outlook and can move forward.
"Reflected patterns, two way mirror
That vibrant woman where is she?
Am I on the outside looking in
Or on the inside looking out?"
To move forward is to accept the choices we make. Like checking a rear view mirrors, the past although behind us, can still be seen in our minds eye. Dwelling on the past can only cloud the mirrors' vision and prevent acceptance and enjoyment of who and what we are in the present.
"Passing choices, rear view mirror
Objects closer than they appear
The past I came from clouds my mind
Isn't it time to move ahead"

This week closes with the temperatures dipping below -30 Celsius in my area. Winter is not my favorite season! Ok, enough whining and on with writing!
This week 'Musings' will talk about the inspiration for the song 'Over the Waterfall' and will answer the question posed last week: "If swept over a waterfall, what can be done to survive?"
☼ ' OVER THE WATERFALL '
A Survival Guide
When writing a song, sometimes the words are first, sometimes the music. For 'Over the Waterfall' it was the latter, the music.
While playing the melody, the ambiance of the notes were giving me a sense of water ~ flowing water.
The lyrics started to take shape with the thought of how life is ever changing, much like a river.
As in life, a river twists and turns resulting in a change in sound, speed and direction. Very quickly, calm water can change into raging rapids as it flows around protruding rocks and trees. In minutes, all can be quiet, calm and serene again ~ as though it was always that way.
In the distance there may be a thunderous sound growing louder. Apprehension mounts with anticipation of unknown changes. With the turn of a corner, without notice the water suddenly disappears and you know, you have no choice, you are going to be swept over a waterfall.
There are choices ~ close your eyes and give in, fight to go back, or look ahead and choose where you will land...
"Swept along the ride of life
A new start every day
Let the current move me on
Ready for the next time I am
Falling free over the waterfall
Face kissed by the sky
I am falling free over the waterfall."
What can be done to survive with the least amount of damage? The chorus continues on...
"Take a deep breath, hands on my head
Falling feet first, ready to ride!"
It may be that your landing is tempestuous...
"Whirl pool spinning round
At times I lose direction
Clear the water from my eyes
Ride the rapids ready to go
Falling free over the waterfall
Face kissed by the sky
I am falling free over the waterfall
Take a deep breath, hands on my head."
These experiences can give time to reflect and reset. Let the calm help you to let go, learn and grow...
"Falling feet first, sinking into
Cool water, gentle sounds
Calm water slows me down."
You have made it! It is time to move on...
"This is my life
Going where I want to
Not swimming upstream
Leave the past behind and I'll be
Falling free over the waterfall
Face kissed by the sky."

☼A Soldier and the Writing of the Song 'WHISPERS ON THE WIND'

A BIT OF BACKGROUND:
In June of 2009, I recorded my first album however, the result was not what I wanted nor expected. Nevertheless, it gave Lee, the producer and myself insight into what would and could be done with the new album, 'Whispers on the Wind' in 2010.
THE INSPIRATION
During that prior time period in 2009, the producer's brother Daryl, a sergeant and linguist in military intelligence was about to be deployed to Iraq. Arrangements were made to have a small gathering of friends and family to say goodbyes and wish him well and although I did not know the family, I was invited to attend.
The day began with a three hour drive to Kentucky. It was daunting when I reflected on what I was invited to share in.
The family warmly greeted us and made me feel like I belonged. There was a sense of deep emotion, a mix of love, sadness, resignation and fear. One could not help but be affected, even as an observer.
A song began to take shape. I was thinking of whispers on the wind and how they could gently carry thoughts and love through the long months of separation and across the miles. Whenever a breeze blew, there would be a sense of being touched by someone who loved you.
THE SONG
As the evening drew to a close, the feel was surreal and intense. The fourteen year old son puts on a strong demeanor. The soldier and his wife along with their little five year old girl retired to spend some alone time.
"Fairy dust and candlelight
Lead us through the night
To dreams fulfilled
You're here with me and I'm yours
Whispers gentle on the wind
Touch our senses with love"
As the night moved on it was my thought that as the little daughter closed her eyes in slumber the time would come for the couple to share their own private moments.
"Butterflies and frosty dew
Saying I love you
In your arms 'till dawn
Passing time oh stand still
Whispers gentle on the wind
Touch our senses with love"
As the fiery skies of morning break, the realization that goodbyes are imminent make hearts ache and yearn for the night to last forever.
"Fireflies and Fiery skies
Time to say goodbye
You have to go
Far away, my heart aches
For fairy dust and candle light
Magic of the night
Whispers gentle on the wind
Heal my senses with you
Whispers gentle on the wind
Touch our senses with love
Whispers Gentle on the wind..."
The music and vocals had to have a melancholy, haunting feel to portray the emotional score of the words. It was wonderful to work with the team and accomplish just that!

I totally lost a day somewhere whoops!
All is as it should be though ... I get to wish you well on this New years' Eve.
ABOUT THE BELL in 'The Foggy Dew'~
The first verse ends with 'the Angelus Bell o'er the Liffey's swell rang out through the Foggy Dew'. The Liffey is the river that runs through the heart of Dublin City in Ireland. The ringing of the Angelus Bell is traditionally used by the church to call parishioners to prayer.
The recording team was in the studio with creativity flowing as fast as the Liffey. The idea of finding the exact tone of that Angelus bell was suggested. This would give accuracy and haunting emotion to the historical message of this song.
A search of the internet gave us what we wanted to hear - the exact tone of the bell although in a half step lower key. I knew immediately that we would change the key to THAT key. Now how to get a good quality sound into our project!
The keyboard being used was a Roland Juno Stage, wonderful instrument with many, many, MANY prerecorded sounds. It was with bated breath we searched the sound tracks - it was there!
So it was that the Angelus Bell found its' way into the recording of 'The Foggy Dew'. And now you know the recording secret - listen for it...
HISTORY AND MEANING ~ 'The Foggy Dew'~
The song is considered to be the most representative of the Easter Rising of 1916, encouraging Irishmen to fight for Ireland, and not for Britain (as in World War I).
Some sources attribute the song to Peadar Kearney who also wrote 'Amhran na bhFiann' (The Soldier's Song), the national anthem of the Republic of Ireland. Most often though it is attributed to a parish priest, Canon Charles O'Neill.
The verses compare two types of Irishmen both fighting for freedom.
1. those who joined the British army to fight on mainland Europe, in Africa and Asia on the battlefields of the First World War.
2. those who fought as Oglaigh na hEireann, Volunteers of Ireland, in the Easter Rising of 1916.
Places and Names:
'Wild Geese' refers to the emigration of the Irish armed forces after the surrender of Limerick in 1691.
'Suvla' is the Suvla Bay, in the Gallipoli Peninsula, in Turkey.
'Sud-el-Bar(SeddelBahr)' refers to Dardanelles fort, a major British position in the disastrous Gallipoli campaign of 1915-1916.
'Pearse or Padraig Pearse (1879-1916)' was an Irish Nationalist and poet; one of the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising and one of the signatories of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic. He was executed for his part in the rebellion.
'Cathal Brugha (1874-1922)' was an Irish nationalist who was jailed for his part in the 1916 Easter Rising. He was also Minister for Defense in the first Republican government under Eamon De Valera. De Valera is sometimes mentioned in place of Cathal Brugha in some renditions. Brugha stood in strong opposition to the Anglo-Irish Treaty and fought against the Irish Free State.
The whole poem refers to the men who died as heroes and legends. This is shown particularly in the last lines of the song. The 'martyrs' of Easter Rising have become glorious, valiant men who battled bravely for freedom and independence, thus being an inspiration to the people of Ireland.
As with many traditional songs, the music preexisted; it belongs to an old love song which names Carl Hardebeck as the arranger John McCormack sang this love song in 1913.

'On Raglan Road' ~ Walking the Walk...

Last Fridays' 'Musings'...
What was to be included in the Copyright Permission Request letter required by the Literary Agency? It had been determined that the recording of 'On Raglan Road' was considered a derivative work, containing both literature and music - was this to affect the outcome? Finally, what would the agency's response be to the modification of the poem reflecting a female perspective rather than a male?
After hours of searching literary sites, the compiling of all the forms and information began. Nothing could be left out or it would mean more correspondence to Ireland or at worst rejection.
SO BEGINS THE LETTER:
"Dear Mr. Jonathan Williams; I am preparing to press a compact disc entitled 'Whispers on the Wind'. The expected pressing date has now been moved to mid June, 2011. I should be grateful if you would grant me permission to include the words of the original poem written by Patrick Kavanagh in a derivative work sang to the tune of the traditional Irish traditional song 'The Dawning of the Day' (Fáinne Geal an Lae)."
"It is my intention to give full and proper credit to Mr. Kavanagh. Compared to the original poem 'On Raglan Road', the words vocalized in the song have minor wording differences and her/she is changed to him/his. If at the time of recording I had known that the words were not traditional they would have been exact. Thus, to give Mr Kavanagh proper credit, I will include the precise words to his poem in the CD insert."
Information such as the name of the pressing company; CD title; Record label; content of the album; and a request for world distribution rights was also included.
The wait began as the letter dated April 25, 2011 made its' way over the ocean to Dublin, Ireland.
MAY 14, 2011, THE ANSWER...
"Dear Belinda; Thank you for your letter of 25 April. This is to give you permission to use the works from Patrick Kavanagh's 'On Raglan Road' on your CD. There is no charge but I should be grateful if you would give me a copy of your disc".
"The acknowledgement on the insert should be as follows: 'On Raglan Road' by Patrick Kavanagh reprinted from Collected Poems, edited by Antoinette Quinn (Allen Lane, 2004), by kind permission of the Trustees of the Estate of the late Katherine B. Kavanagh, through the Jonathan Williams Literary Agency. With best wishes, Jonathan (Williams)."
The CD could now be pressed! Thus concludes the chapter of 'On Raglan Road', I hope you enjoyed the journey!

The Story of 'On Raglan Road' Travels On...
Last week the 'Saga of the Song' had unanswered questions:
Should a letter be mailed to Ireland? If weeks passed, would there be a way of knowing the letter reached its' destination? Was the address correct?
How long would I have to wait? Would the fee would be astronomical? Would the literary agency refuse to grant permission to have the words printed and recorded? What a dilemma!
Determinedly the search continued for confirm- ation that the Jonathan Williams Agency did indeed exist and the address was correct.
Literary sites on the internet validated this information and added that the agency contact was the said Johathan Williams himself. One last site to look at and then the decision...
As the last site opened, there it was...EUREKA, a phone number!
Typing 'how to phone Ireland' into Google, I obtained the international dialing code and picked up the phone. But wait...what is the time difference? Back to Google - Dublin was 7 hours ahead of Alberta time and thus, the call would have to be made in the morning.
Early the next morning, the call to Ireland was received by a voice-mail greeting identifying the Jonathan Williams Agency. An hour or so later, the call was returned and it appeared I did have a chance of getting permission to use 'On Raglan Road'.
Mr Williams requested a letter with details of how the poem would be recorded and distributed. So there it was, I had a letter to get off to Ireland after all.
More questions now! What does one include in a Literary Copyright Permission Request? The words of poem would be printed as well as sang thus becoming what is called a Derivative Work, how might this affect the outcome? The words also had been slightly modified to reflect a female perspective rather than a male (remember, 'On Raglan Road' was not initially to be part of the CD lineup), so what would the agencys' response be to this change?

The Story of 'On Raglan Road' Continues...
©Getting Permissions©
'On Raglan Road' was now recorded and the mp3 was sent to family and friends to get their input. Replies were unanimous ~ It HAD t be on the CD and it HAD to remain as it was recorded - no extra tracks. Just a note: a traditional song is free to record and sell on a CD. It was the impression that it was indeed traditional however, I would check to make sure.
Licencing request documents were sent to The Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Agency (CMRRA). CMRRA is a non-profit music licensing agency, which represents the vast majority of music copyright owners (usually called music publishers) doing business in Canada.
Their reply informed me that although the music of 'On Raglan Road' was traditional (said to be from a traditional song called "The Dawning of the Day"), the words were from a poem written by an Irish poet, Patrick Kavanagh (first published in 1946). I would now have to find the literary agency that represented his estate.
A search revealed that the Jonathan Williams Literary Agency located in Dublin, Ireland was the said representative. There seemed to be no email address anywhere, just a street address.
This process could take a long, long time! I could write to Ireland, not knowing if the address were correct or even if they actually received the letter. How long should I wait? What if I waited for months and the fee was more than I could afford? What if they refused licensing? What to do!
The saga continues next Friday check back...
Have a Great Week ~ Belinda ♥

~The Recording of 'On Raglan Road'~ How the song becomes part of the 'Whispers on the Wind' CD quite by accident.

Our recording days are long, sometimes 12 to 14 hours. On this particular day we had worked on one of my original tunes called 'Seize the Day' and it seemed no matter what we did, the music was just not going to come together.
Frustrated and tired the producer/engineer and musicians decided to take a break - I stayed behind in the studio.
To relax, I often play my guitar and just let my mind drift - as I began to play, the words and music of 'On Raglan Road' flowed through me.
I was suddenly aware of the producer saying 'Stop! Stop!'
Rather surprised, I watched as he went over to the controls and started recording. He told me to start again and left.
I returned to my state of mind and began to play. When I was finished I sat for a moment in the silence.
Outside the studio, the mood had changed. I was told that somtimes things happen for a reason. The day had been so unproductive yet in but 5 minutes, in one take, we had a beautiful acoustic song adding its' presence to the album.
Ahhh but there is more! I would now have to make sure I did not have to obtain and pay for what is called a Mechanical License to legally record/distribute the song. It was my thought that it was traditional and that being so, I would not have to have licencing.
The music was indeed centuries old, however, the words were those of an Irish poet. What would happen now? The story continues next Friday...
Have an Sweet Weekend ~ Belinda ♥

~ The Recording Process ~
One day of settling in and adjusting to the time change before the creativity begins.
The first recording day starts with a meeting the producer/engineer to plan. We have one month of intensive work ahead.
The following day, the producer and musicians brainstorm each song and then it is time for me to start recording my tracks. Other musicians can record their tracks after my return to Canada although, we will attempt to get as much done as we can while I am present.
What is a track? Usually one track consists of the performance of one musical instrument or one voice.
Following the completion of all the tracks, many hours of mixing and mastering will be accomplished by the sound engineer.
To make sure that the timing is right on, a click track is used. What is that!! This is a recording of a steady click, similar to a metronome. I wear headphones and will hear this steady click as I sing and play.
The first time I recorded, it was so distracting I would forget what I was doing! Now, I think of it as a drum beat and can let it fade into the back ground but still be aware of the steady rhythm.
Why would a click track be necessary? Because there are many more tracks to be added: different instruments; more vocals and other ambient sounds (all these together are called the mix).
If a click track is not used, for example, when the bass guitarist comes to lay down his track and the timing is slower and faster, he will have a very difficult time keeping in sync. The song will definately suffer.
Sound confusing? I know it was for me at first!!
Next week I will talk more on the recording process and anything else you might like to know about. You can leave your impressions in the comments area above.
Have an awesome weekend ~ Belinda ♥

~ Recording Experience ~
So started the album journey
June 5, 2010 ~
This is the day I was to fly to Cincinnati, Ohio to record the 'Whispers on the Wind' CD.
Two hours by car to the Edmonton Int'l Airport, which means being on the road four hours before flight time. All was moving smoothly, on the road in good time, driving along listening to tunes and reflecting on the upcoming project.
Suddenly, there was a strange odor in the car and I looked around to see what we might be passing that could be the cause. Within five minutes, the car stopped dead! Using the momentum of travelling 100 kms per hour, the car coasted to the side of the highway and we sat stunned and surprised, pondering what had just happened.
Reality kicked in - how to make it to the airport? A check under the hood revealed a broken water hose and pools of antifreeze on the pavement (the strange odor). Apparently the hose broke with such force that the fluid was drained before the car sensors could even register the engine was in trouble.
There it is, hood up, dead car and no way to get to the airport. Kind motorists stopped but there was nothing to be done. Resigned to the fact that the airport was out of the question, what was needed was a motorist going the direction of home.
In a short period of time, a car stops and unbelievably, it is a musician friend. A towing company was phoned to come and get the dead car (engine was cooked).
By this unusual and crazy turn of events, I had a ride to the airport and we made it in time!!! Can you believe it? Thank you Ken♥
